prosperous middle east aligned with us. i share this hope. but hope is not a strategy. we can't support our friends and defeat our enemies in the middle east when our words are not backed up by deeds. when our defense spending is being arbitrarily and deeply cut. when we have no trade agenda to speak of. the perception of our strategy is not one of partnership, but of passivity. >> kimberly: all right. do you think this is the right message and tone? a lot of discussion whether or not romney was going to come out on top on foreign policy. generally speaking, it's been one of the strong suits of president obama, given the past developments versus recent developments. >> eric: yeah, i'm not sure it was so -- i don't know. it was okay. it was good. he hit on all the point he is needed to make. he had to do it. something people said, president obama has an ad out today saying he is weak on foreign policy, a wimp. amateurish. he wasn't amateurish. he showed some poise. hope is not a strategy was a great line.

everybody will pick it up and they should run with it. he talked about cutting off aid to egypt, which is on a lot of people's minds. if you don't get your act together, we may cut off aid. he needed to do that. he showed presidential material. as far as exciting, it wasn't very exciting. so what? he did what he had to do. >> kimberly: you brought up the aid to egypt, some consider a controversial position. strong message about the type of leadership from romney should he be elected. dana, i want to ask your opinion. >> in egypt, i'll use our influence, including clear condition on our aid to urge the new government to represent all, maintain peace treaty with israel. we must persuade our friends an allies to place similar stipulation on their aid. >> dana: overall, good timing. effective timing. if he had given the speech two

weeks ago, it would have been lost in the benghazi fall-out. looking at that. it would have been the wrong time. two weeks for foreign policy debate, that eric will go for us. he had the venue. military virginia. that was good. tone was good. to your question about what he said there, i think that president obama is vulnerable on foreign policy. if you read the speech and you care about foreign policy, you could go down each area of the world and say it would make more sense. in particular, he said i would set clear conditions. people are willing to give foreign aid. one thing they require is there be clear conditions for what standards you have to meet to get the benefit of the u.s. taxpayers helping you out. >> kimberly: do you think he hit the right tone overall? some said it was reaganesque. >> greg: it was romneyesque.

not reaganesque. i think president obama has to be good about the election today. not the american one, venezuelan one. his policies are popular somewhere. romney has distinction in foreign policy, it's this. remember who you are dealing with. obama is like me. he preferred to be cool rather than rule. he took exception to exceptionalism. what romney is saying is we're going back to the way we were. we have don't care if you don't like us. we'd rath ber respected and feared than be part of anti-bullying campaign. >> kimberly: bob, you seem enthralled. otherwise inspired. >> bob: inspired the word. dana is right. this would have been lost if not for the timing of it. not a bad delivery. this is where romney fell short. he says. he does not call for a cutoff date at all. he wants condition. a lot of people on the right want to cut off aid altogether. >> eric: wait. >> bob: por done me? >> eric: if conditions

aren't met, then what? >> bob: i don't know what that means. >> bob: if i could finish. >> eric: again, bob -- finish. okay. >> bob: he said that we should begin to supply our friends in syria, syrian revolt. which would be fine especially our closest allies like turkey don't know who the friends are and not supplying aid. time that china was becoming a regional power. same time he invests in businesses in china. >> kimberly: you're still here. letting you get the time. >> eric: the last thing i say, all the things he said are good catch phrases but he backed them up with no specifics. example what he'd do for egypt if they didn't meet the conditions he's talking about. >> greg: at least he mentioned china. the only time president obama

talks about china is when he is looking at the wilson phillips records. remember her? she was adorable. my revelation -- >> bob: who is wilson phillips? >> greg: don't worry about it. my revelation is the foreign response to romney debate, yikes in 12 languages. reassuring that governor romney has potential foreign policy powerhouse that the world is spooked by him. that is important. good to have the neighbors scared of you than the reverse. having lived in hell's kitchen that is the way to be. it's a macro hell's kitchen. crazy, creepy people out there. good they're terrified of the united states. >> bob: about romney? >> greg: spooked about anybody willing to use force rather than -- let's go back. focus on iran. remember in 2009 how president obama reacted to iran.

a muted response. then he said he was troubled. his rough stance was a frown. that is what romney is talking about. >> dana: the other thing, his message to the debate is return america to position of economic strength and growth. if you talk foreign policy, the economic policy matters because you want a strong growing america to become the lender not be the borrower. we're not on that path. romney not saying he could get it done and get us on a better path to be a stronger world player in the future. >> bob: what he said about iran, i would make the sanctions tougher. move the mediterranean fleet up near iran and the pacific fleet near iran, both have been done. >> dana: i thought you said he didn't give specifics. >> bob: he didn't.

cnn and the rest concurred. why did they buy the lie? downplay al-qaeda and strategy for the election before protection. that may be why bob's suspenders are more secure than the consulate. maybe they want to believe the lie. it's the west that is the root of all evil, not actual evil. america is a bad guy even if the other guy threw the first punch. foreign policy is anti-bullying add for smaller, meaner country. obama spent his term raising awareness of how cool is it to blame america first. hipster diplomacy at its worst. you have incompetence in tandem. bicycle built for two with the administration and adoring media peddling the same strike. no wonder they'd rather discuss big bird than benghazi. why ruffle any real feathers? i want to go to mitt romney talking about this video. the administration blamed earlier today.

music. >> greg: no. >> dana: president obama in hollywood this weekend for another star-studded rundraiser. this one involved george clooney. jon bon jovi, katy perry and stevie wonder. the president addressed his debate performance with some self-deprecating humor. >> everybody here is incredible professionals, great friends and they just perform flawlessly, night after night. i can't always say the same. >> dana: the president admits the flaws and robert gibbs blames romney saying he was dishonest. >> governor romney had a masterful, theatrical performance this past week. the underpinnings and foundation of the performance were dishonest. >> dana: that memo went out yesterday or sunday before the sunday shows because i saw three people use masterful, theatrical performance. talking points are guidelines. my question for you, bobsh if

you were advisor on the obama campaign and you could see the debate wasn't going well. would you spent the next six days coming up with other excuses or done what president obama did to say not my best performance but i'll do better next time. >> bob: when you make a mistake, it's good in politics. i remember bill clinton did badly at the democratic national committee speech. he then went on jay leno and made fun and played his saxophone. romney got high boost from the first debate. two things to keep in mind. one, the polls show that the enthusiasm gap that romney has now is in his favor over obam obama. now this means that the democrats' base because they fear romney could be elected is enthusiastic. the swing voter polls in swing state they ask about taking position on this, after the

debate, obama 43, romney 20. connects well with ordinary americans. obama 69. romney 7. so i think that rom lom has work to make up for himself but he did a good job. he did give himself another shot at this. the boosts like that, the boosts go away. >> dana: you pretty much the whole block so now we can kick it around the rest of the time. when you look at the number on the enthusiasm that bob mentioned, republicans are well more enthusiastic than democrats. if you are the obama campaign you get the numbers today. what goes through your mind about the $150 million you spent? >> kimberly: somebody better do something fast. this isn't going well for him. bob, you studied this historically for many, many years. >> bob: many, many, many years. >> kimberly: also you look at the gallop polls that is the biggest jump. >> bob: the biggest. >> kimberly: in all time in a presidential debate. vu have to say -- you have to

say that is disconcerting for obama. >> dana: eric in here. i don't think we had time to make a graph. we have the paperwork. the pew poll came out and romney ahead by four points. he went up four points in less than two-and-a-half weeks. pretty good. >> eric: you know what this is? you talk about the talking point that came out before the sunday shows. theatrical performance. day after debate it was liar, liar, liar. this is a sign of desperation. the campaign is in panic mode because they're seeing the polls move. no matter what they do, they spent $200 million on necktive attack ads on romney and this is what they're getting? a landslide away from obama. they're panicked. i'm not sure what the next one is. liar, liar, liar. who knows what? no one else -- >> dana: i said this morning they'd start calling him ugly. >> greg: never do that. i have a point. we keep calling this a jump.

it wasn't a jump. snake river canyon. obama stunk up that place like a bathroom. no wonder he had to go to moron valley to seek solace. this was so de stating that he danieled other people. other people not in the room. >> dana: collateral damage. >> greg: the media complex is main sleighting prozac. media matters is on suicide watch. bill maher had to double the intake of prostitutes. that's how depressed they are. >> bob: that could be a little overstatement. >> greg: we haven't heard from him. he disappeared. >> bob: in swing states the poll after the debate and the democrats and republican poll is honest and truthful, romney is down 14%. talks about is a strong leader, down 23%. willing to change his position at any given time 20. %. that's all he gets. romney still has problems left to go.

expectations for obama were sky high going in the debate. >> dana: i don't think so. you said it earlier. i don't think so. the expectations were romney were high because if he had not done well we'd talk about how the campa shambles and how we figure out a way to talk about the finish line. >> bob: he did well because expectations were low. >> eric: he was more prepared and more ready. >> bob: i said that. >> dana: another problem that obama's team has. detailed in the "new york times" today. second time that somebody on background on the obama campaign said that obama has distain for romney. >> kimberly: you can tell. >> dana: disdain is looking down at somebody. half the country looks down at the white house at the rest of america. that is why quietly the polls are going up. the disdain shows. what has eever done?

supply of cheaper fuel. if it's good for one state, whee not good for 57, president obama. >> dana: the secretary of energy thought it would be good idea to have european gas prices. now long beach, the average, $4.60. highest one in long beach was $6.65. imagine you drive along the highway you need to get gas and you see that. the environmental regulations across the board are -- well, not fair that california then can wave theirs. they have -- they got carved off early on. energy legislation. >> eric: they added additional regulation to california. just bringing it down to the rest. the question is if that works. using regulation for the gas prices, bob, why don't we reduce the regulations? >> bob: the two biggest

refineries in california were offline for a month. because of the electricity problems. if you take the biggest refineries and you knock them out, i assume it means that demand would run up above of supply. you are a capitalist -- >> eric: you increase supply. the way you do it not just refineries in california. use the supply -- but we can't because of the regulation. >> kimberly: that is a problem if you overregulate like that. now a crisis situation of their own making in many respects. some of the ardent environmentalists want to see refineries in the line. tremendous impact on the jobs. look at prices. how are they supposed to get to work. california is all about the driving. >> bob: they are coming back online now. you can't say if a third of increase goes down you don't see supply in increase. >> eric: $4.67 in california. $3.6 of 5 in new jersey because of the location.

if you open up the country for gas, it doesn't matter where you refine it -- >> bob: i'm asking if you have an advantage, cut off, do you have an increase, right? >> eric: sure. if you increase by a third. price goes up. >> kimberly: only get it from there. >> greg: this is president obama's war on women. how will young single women get to planned parenthood if gasoline is expensive. who is unaffected by this? celebrities who rail against fracking who rail against the ski-tone pipeline -- keystone pipeline. leo dicaprios who come out against this stuff. as a rich liberal they don't believe others should have the freedom to drive the way they do. you are right. america is not a european country. it takes hours to get from france to england by a train. it's a freight train. america is made for cars and

>> bob: wild scene at a hotel in philadelphia this weekend, reminds me of my past life. a fight broke out between dozen of guests at two wedding parties. a kid with a cell phone captured the chaos. the brawl reportedly started between two brothers that somehow guests from a second wedding party who pulled in.

one of the brides died of a heart attack at the scene. have you ever been at a scene like this before? >> eric: this is the one you have to be first with? no, i haven't been. fights before, but not at a wedding. this is terrible. tragic. >> bob: somebody died. >> greg: the person died connected to the brawl, though? but you get the feeling that if the liberty bell was not in philadelphia it never would have been cracked. >> bob: that is a good point. supposed to be the capital of our country, too, and something about philadelphia where they fights are, the you know, the philadelphia eagles fans are amongst the worst in the country. >> eric: and the flyers. >> greg: phillies. >> bob: something in the water or the blood or something. >> greg: or in philly. >> bob: i know you haven't been to a scene like this before, i hope. >> dana: that was a press briefing. >> greg: you got in a fistfight this morning. >> eric: going to be in a fistfight with you one of these days. >> bob: you have been

underneath it. a friend of mine died on october 1. valerie pinson who worked with me in the carter white house. she started off as switchboard operator at the pentagon and went on to become a special assistant to a close personal advisor to president lyndon johnson. she worked on the war on poverty. she did enormous work in the liaison office with me and carter administration. strong woman advocate and strong in the civil rights movement. one of the most tremendous people i have met in my life. she taught me a life. she died. a lot of us who will miss her terribly, pass on to her daughter tracy and her granddaughter maya you had a wonderful mother and grandmother and couldn't ask for anybody better. sweet woman. i know she is in especially looking down on us now. i'll -- she is in heaven looking down on us. i'll miss her very much. >> kimberly: very sweet. >> eric: i want to let everyone know david axelrod, yes, he did text me and
